WELCOME TO PLYMOUTH SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL AND THE 9TH GRADE!
Course Goals:
The main purpose of Study Skills is to help you achieve academic success during your freshman year.  You will learn new strategies and review helpful techniques that may have been helpful to you in previous years.  You will strengthen your study skills along with test preparation and test taking skills.  You will also learn to improve organization, manage your belongings (and your schedule) and manage your time to complete short and long term assignments.  All of these things combined with focus and hard work will ensure success during your freshman year.
Teacher Expectations:
I will be expected to do the following:
·        Assist you with course work, notes, and classroom assignments
·        Teach and help you with organizational skills
·        Help you improve your study habits and reach your academic goals
·        Help with taking notes, test preparation, test taking, review of class lessons and homework help
Student Expectations:
You will be expected to do the following
·        Arrive to class ON TIME
·        Come to class prepared.  You must come to class with school work to do every day.  There is always something to do.  You are expected to have all of your materials needed to complete your work (notebook, pencil, pen, worksheet, class notes and agenda)
·        Keep a current agenda.  You are REQUIRED to keep a current agenda with daily assignments from all of your classes.  The agenda can either be a PSHS agenda, or one of your own.  Loose leaf paper or scrap paper is not acceptable.  I will check your agenda every class to make sure that it is up to date and that you are writing your assignments in it.  This will be part of the course grade!
·        Be respectful!!  You are REQUIRED to be RESPECTFUL to everyone in the class!  This also includes using appropriate language and being respectful to the room itself and the class materials.
Required Materials:
·        All of you assignments, notes, worksheets
·        Something to write with
Grading:
This is a semester class and you earn 2.5 credits for successfully completing this class.  This class is graded on a pass/fail system.  You and I will grade you in the following areas and you will have the opportunity to earn up to 15 points per class (up to 3 points per category):
·        Preparedness
·        Focus/On Task
·        Time Management
·        Respects Students/Teachers
·        Work Completion on Assignments
Extra Help:
I will be after school every TUESDAY; however, I am flexible and usually available to stay after on other days, as long as there have been prior arrangements.  Please take a look at my teacher blog.  On the blog, I reiterate what you need to complete for your academic assignments, along with any other pertinent information.

Also, please email me if you have any questions – cfrancis@plymouth.k12.ma.us
Cell Phones:
Cell phones are not allowed during class – not even as a calculator or for listening to music during class.  There may be times when I will allow you to use your cell phone in class for an assignment, but please keep them in your backpacks until I direct you to take them out.  If I see your phone out, I will give you one warning and ask you to put it away.  If I see your phone out a second time, I will call an administrator and they will take your phone away from you for the remainder of the day.
Most Importantly:
Always try your BEST!!  Be nice and work hard!!  I will do everything I can to help you succeed, but you also have to be responsible and take ownership of your learning and education.  You have the power and potential to do well!
