Take Ownership

Some of the major topics we have been discussing lately during the Study Lab are:  the importance of staying organized and the importance of students themselves being responsible for getting assignments done.  One thing I stress to students is that this motivation, or inner drive to succeed MUST come from them!  As a teacher, I can only do so much.  I can teach the lesson, I can modify the lesson, I can answer questions when something is unclear, but when it comes to doing the actual work, students have to take owership of it.  This topic has come up many times in Study Lab.  Students have the opportunity to earn a passing grade in Study Lab by doing only these 4 things:

  • Arrive on time
  • Bring an organized agenda (and use it)
  • Come prepared to work (with assignments or projects)
  • Work dilligently throughout class

It is not difficult to receive a passing grade in Study Lab.  Students simply have to remember to come with work to do and maintain their focus throughout the period to get it done.

In class this week, I will be reinforcing what students need to know about study skills, test taking skills and other important tips to be successful in school.  We will be discussing the information found on this website.

Students need to remember that THEY need to take ownership of their learning, THEY need to find the inner motivation to succeed, and be proud of what they know by putting in their best effort and completing quality work.
